What is an Inertial Measurement Unit?

An Inertial Measurement Unit, or IMU, tracks 3D movement using a 3-axis gyroscope for rotational motion and a 3-axis accelerometer for translational motion. The accelerometer detects speed and directional changes, while the gyroscope captures rotational movement.
Together, these sensors provide detailed insights into an object’s position and movement, allowing the IMU to monitor and control the orientation and path of moving objects. This makes IMUs essential for applications like autonomous navigation, motion tracking, and industrial robotics.
